There are many common injury presentations for runners - achilles tendonitis, patellar tendonitis, shin splints, plantar fasciitis, hamstring injuries, quadriceps strsain , Iiiotibial tract syndrome, external rotators strain and back injuries are just a few.
Many of these injuries are preventable Often there is dysfunction in the joints around the hips and back which prevent the forces developed whilst running from being dissipated throughout the body. Poor ability of some joints to move will mean compensating elswhere. Usually on a short run this may not cause a problem, however when stepping up to the longer races such as the marathon, breakdown will occur at the weakest point
An osteopath looks not just at the local site of injury but the mechanics of the whole body to assess why the stresses and strains on an area have not been adequately coped with by the body and where mechanical dysfunctions in one area may have led to excesive loads elsewhere. Osteopathy can often help where treatment just aimed at the site of injury has failed.
In general, running on a track, sand or grass is preferable to running on tarmac or pavement.
