Named after its inventor Dr Epley and also known as The Canalith Repositioning Manoeuvre, it was first described in 1992and consists of a test sequence whereby the patient is placed into different positions which are meant to restimulate or recreate the previously experienced transient vertigo attacks. The manoeuvre is performed relatively quickly and easily and there are no medications administered. The simple positioning maneuver is often successful in particular when repeated for any milder reoccurrences. The patient should be warned that it is likely that a repetition of the disturbing symptoms with each turn of the head is experienced. Aside from the expected reproduction of symptoms and occasional vomiting, there have been no reported adverse events from performing it.
