When an osteopath feels how your joints are moving they are thinking of three main factors – range of movement (how far it moves in a direction), quality of movement (how well or easily it moves) and end-feel. End-feel is the feeling perceived at towards or at the limit of the movement. Like ROM and QOM it provides information on how and why a joints mobility is altered. For example, an abrupt hard end-feel can indicate a limitation of range of movement caused by bone growth on the margins of the joint.; a springy, almost rebounding end-feel is caused by muscle tightness or spasm; an “empty” end-feel indicates a hypermoblie (over mobile) joint due to a torn ligament.
